Chris Brown Pleads Guilty in London Nightclub Brawl

LONDON-Grammy-winning U.S. singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Friday to an affray charge arising from a 2023 altercation at a London nightclub, after prosecutors agreed to drop more serious charges including assault, attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Brown, 37, changed his plea during a hearing at Southwark Crown Court, avoiding a trial that had been scheduled for October. His friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray in connection with the same incident.

The case stems from an altercation at the Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district in February 2023. Prosecutors had alleged that Brown attacked music producer Abraham Diaw with a glass bottle during a confrontation that took place in front of numerous patrons and was captured by the club’s surveillance cameras.

Following Brown’s guilty plea, prosecutors withdrew charges of assault, attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of a bottle as an offensive weapon. The affray charge carries a maximum prison sentence of three years under British law.

Claire Campbell, a senior prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, described the incident as a “vicious and unprovoked attack” carried out by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub. She said Brown had used a glass bottle to strike the victim’s head twice and added that the Crown Prosecution Service would continue working with police and criminal justice partners to pursue violent offenses regardless of the status of those involved.

Brown had previously denied the more serious allegations. He was granted bail of 5 million pounds ($6.75 million), allowing him to continue touring Europe and North America last summer while awaiting legal proceedings.

The court allowed Brown to remain on bail following Friday’s hearing. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 26.

After leaving the courthouse, Brown, dressed in a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, stopped to sign autographs for supporters gathered outside.

Brown first rose to prominence as a teenager in 2005 and has remained one of the best-known figures in contemporary R&B music. He won his first Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.” and received a second award in the same category in 2025 for “11:11 (Deluxe).”
