Danish Fossil Cliffs Poised for UNESCO World Heritage Recognition
NYKØBING MORS, DENMARK_Two coastal cliff sites in Denmark known for exceptionally preserved 55-million-year-old fossils are expected to receive UNESCO World Heritage status as the United Nations cultural agency’s World Heritage Committee meets in South Korea, highlighting their scientific significance and potential contribution to research on prehistoric life and ancient climate change.
The sites, Hanklit and Knudeklint, overlook the Limfjord on the Danish islands of Mors and Fur and have yielded remarkably preserved fossils of early insects, birds, turtles and more than 80 species of fish, including ancient relatives of modern mackerel and herring.
The cliffs have long been recognized for the quality of their fossil record. UNESCO has described the specimens as “exceedingly well-preserved,” while the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has recommended that the sites be added to the World Heritage List. The locations are already included on UNESCO’s tentative list.
Jan Audun Rasmussen, a researcher and curator at Museum Mors who helped prepare Denmark’s nomination, said the deposits provide rare evidence of the early evolution of several fish and bird lineages.
Rasmussen said the fossils owe their exceptional condition to the environment that existed around 55 million years ago, when present-day Denmark lay beneath the sea. The oxygen-poor clay seabed of the Limfjord prevented organisms from decomposing the remains of animals that settled on the seafloor, allowing fossils to be preserved in extraordinary detail.
Scientists say the sites also provide valuable evidence of one of Earth’s most significant prehistoric warming episodes. About 56 million years ago, a major release of greenhouse gases caused global temperatures to rise by an estimated 5 to 8 degrees Celsius, triggering widespread environmental change.
Laura Jane Cotton of Denmark’s Natural History Museum said the fossil record preserved in the Limfjord cliffs offers researchers one of the best natural comparisons for understanding the effects of modern climate change.
According to Cotton, fossils recovered from layers deposited before, during and after the ancient warming event allow scientists to examine how ecosystems responded to rapid shifts in climate and how species changed or disappeared over time.
If approved, Hanklit and Knudeklint would become the fifth natural site under Danish sovereignty to receive UNESCO World Heritage status, including one located in the autonomous territory of Greenland.
Efforts to secure UNESCO recognition began in 2010. The cliffs have long been protected under Danish law, reflecting their scientific importance and popularity among amateur fossil hunters.
Local officials also expect the designation to strengthen tourism. Thomas Olesen, project leader for the Skive municipality, said UNESCO recognition could provide an economic boost, particularly for the island of Fur, which has a population of about 700 residents.
The World Heritage designation would recognize not only the geological and paleontological importance of the sites but also their continuing contribution to scientific research into Earth’s ancient ecosystems and long-term climate history.
